What to Bring to Machu Picchu?

The climate in Machu Picchu is cloud forest (tropical, warm, and humid), very different from the cold in the city of Cusco. In addition, there are strict rules for entering the wonder. Take note of the essentials:

🛂 MANDATORY Documents

  • Original Physical Passport (or ID/National Identity Card if you are from the CAN). Without the original document, you will NOT be able to board the train or enter the citadel.
  • Original physical student ID (only if you booked with a student discount).

🧥 Clothing (Layers)

  • Warm jacket (It is very cold in Cusco at 04:00 a.m.).
  • Light clothing underneath (T-shirt, it will be hot at noon in the citadel).
  • Rain poncho (The tropical climate is unpredictable all year round).
  • Comfortable trekking shoes (Entering with high heels or hard-soled shoes is prohibited).

☀️ Personal Protection

  • Mosquito repellent (Essential in Aguas Calientes).
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • Basic personal medication.

🎒 Accessories (Strict Rules)

  • Very small backpack (Only “daypack” type backpacks not exceeding 40x35x20 cm are allowed).
  • Camera or mobile phone with empty memory and 100% battery (or Powerbank).
  • Water bottle (Single-use plastic bottles are prohibited; bring a reusable water bottle or canteen).

Frequently Asked Questions about the Machu Picchu Full Day Tour

1. Do I need to bring my original Passport?

Yes, it is 100% mandatory. The Peruvian government and train companies require you to present your Original Passport (or the identity document used for booking) physically. If you only bring a photocopy or a photo on your cell phone, you will be denied boarding the train and entry to the citadel with no right to a refund.

2. How far in advance should I book?

Machu Picchu has a very limited daily capacity established by UNESCO. To secure the main circuit, we recommend booking at least 2 months in advance. For high-season dates (May to September), booking 3 to 4 months in advance is ideal.

3. Which circuit is included in this tour?

Our agency will always strive to secure Circuit 2 (Classic Circuit), which allows you to take the famous postcard photo from the guardian’s house. However, due to new Ministry of Culture regulations, tickets are strictly subject to availability at the time of purchase. If you book on short notice, we may offer you alternative circuits (Circuit 1 or 3).

4. Can I hike Huayna Picchu mountain on this 1-day tour?

It is neither recommended nor logistically viable. The Huayna Picchu mountain requires a special ticket (Circuit 3 + Huayna Picchu) that sells out months in advance, and the hike takes an additional 3 hours, which would cause you to miss your return train schedules on a single-day excursion. If you wish to climb Huayna Picchu, we recommend a 2-day itinerary.

5. Will I suffer from altitude sickness (soroche) in Machu Picchu?

Surprisingly to many tourists, Machu Picchu is much lower than the city of Cusco. While Cusco is at 3,399 meters above sea level (masl), the Machu Picchu citadel is located at 2,430 masl. By dropping nearly a thousand meters, your body will have more oxygen, making it very unlikely to experience altitude sickness here.

6. Are drones or tripods allowed?

No. Due to strict heritage conservation regulations, it is strictly forbidden to enter Machu Picchu with drones, tripods, selfie sticks, or pointed umbrellas. If you bring any of these, you must leave them in the lockers at the entrance gate.

7. Can I bring food into the citadel?

You can carry light snacks (energy bars, dried fruits, chocolates) in your small backpack, but eating, having a picnic, or leaving trash inside the archaeological citadel is strictly prohibited. You must consume your food before entering or after leaving it.
